Trust Score and 24h volume (normalised, in USD) are live data from CoinGecko. Fees and licences come from each exchange's website.
Volume tells you where liquidity is; it does not tell you whether your coins are safe. Our list starts from CoinGecko’s Trust Score and then checks the things that matter when something goes wrong: licences, reserves and how the exchange handled past incidents.
The EU’s MiCA licence, a US state money-transmitter licence or Dubai’s VARA approval means a regulator supervises the entity you sign up with. A global platform registered offshore may serve you without any of that protection.
Regular Merkle-tree reports—published by exchanges such as Kraken and OKX—show that customer balances are backed one-to-one. They do not show liabilities, so they reduce risk rather than remove it.
Entry-level spot fees in this list range from about 0.08% to 0.60% per trade. Instant “buy” buttons and card purchases often cost 1–4% more than the order book, so use the advanced trade screen.
Hacks and enforcement actions are part of every review. What matters is whether users were repaid and how quickly withdrawals reopened.
Safety habit: keep only what you trade on an exchange, switch on app-based 2FA and a withdrawal whitelist, and move long-term holdings to a wallet you control.
The order of this list follows CoinGecko's Trust Score at the time of our review. CoinGecko rates every exchange on liquidity, scale of operations, cybersecurity and proof of reserves, so the score reflects how genuine and deep an exchange's market is, not only how big it is. The trust score and volume columns refresh automatically.
Our star rating then scores five things that matter to a trader: security (licences, proof of reserves, incident history), fees, liquidity, the range of coins and products, and ease of use. Every fact in the reviews was checked on the exchange's own website and on regulators' registers.
The list follows the CoinGecko Trust Score, which rates exchanges on liquidity, scale of operations, cybersecurity and proof of reserves. The trust score and the 24-hour trading volume in the table update live from CoinGecko. Our own star rating adds fees, coin choice, licences and ease of use.
Spot fees on the large exchanges usually start between 0.08% and 0.25% per trade for small accounts and fall with higher monthly volume or when you pay fees in the exchange token. Compare the maker and taker columns above and check the exchange's own fee page before trading, because tiers change often.
Exchanges with proof of reserves, cold storage and a licence in your country are safer, but no exchange is risk-free: hacks, insolvencies and account freezes have happened. Many traders keep only what they actively trade on the exchange and move long-term holdings to a wallet they control.
Almost every exchange in this list requires identity verification before you can deposit fiat money, trade or withdraw. The exact limits for unverified accounts are listed in each review.
Availability differs by country. Some exchanges block residents of the United States, the United Kingdom or other regions, or offer only part of their products there. Each review lists the main licences; always check the exchange's terms for your country before signing up.
Risk warning: Crypto assets are highly volatile and largely unregulated; you can lose all of your money. Exchanges can be hacked or fail. Only invest what you can afford to lose.
